Focused on creating superior & distinguished wines
Our Mission: preserve the diversity of small vineyard owners, share the passion for luxurious hand-crafted wines and work together to create the most individual and impressive collection of brands in California.
Established more than 12 years ago, Appellation Trading Company includes the industry’s most professional men and women, sommeliers, top viticulturists, accomplished winemakers and cellar masters. Each person at ATC has the same drive, to come together with others, on common ground in Napa Valley as well as California’s most prominent growing regions.
Charles Bartlett’s experience in sales proved to be incredibly valuable when the commodity market became flooded with finished wine due to the economic crash. Bartlett would buy inventory at a good price, relabel the wines, and sell the wine to other businesses, like exporters.
Bartlett made his move, turning his small-scale operation into a 3000 case enterprise. After reselling wine for a couple of years, the opportunity for the local winemakers and ATC to create private labels for control states formed. This allowed him to develop a firm understanding of the industry and how winery owners operate.
Bartlett brought John Galvin on board at ATC—and though their vocation has changed, their principle and approach are still the same; they remain, as Galvin puts it, “solution providers in the sales world.” This also marked the year ATC acquired the brand Edict to see if ATC could take a great winery and make it better.
Built our winery in Napa, became an 02 “bonded winery” that enabled us to buy bulk wine, blend and bottle it on site. Bartlett and Galvin knew they needed to tighten their control over their supply chain, so they decided to build their own facility and install their own bottling line.
Adding and incorporating stainless steel tanks for wine storage enhances on-site capacity to over 34,000 gallons. This addition facilitates flexible blending and bottling by accommodating diverse lot sizes, streamlining production, and ensuring quality control.
The procurement of a bottling truck and equipment is a pivotal step, enabling in-house packaging of both ATC products and client projects. This move streamlines production, ensures customization, optimizes costs, and strengthens market presence, demonstrating a commitment to quality and efficiency.
Embracing sustainability, solar panels have been installed on the roof, effectively lowering both our carbon footprint and energy costs. This eco-conscious initiative demonstrates a commitment to environmental responsibility while also yielding financial benefits.
We’ve expanded our winery and warehouse by doubling the space, all within our current location. This strategic expansion into the neighboring area enhances our operational capacity without the need for relocation.
We Are Unique in the Premium Wine Business
ATC creates wines that our customers and clients need, not just what we have in bottles/barrels at any given time. We create wines from our unparalleled resources to achieve respect from anyone who enjoys our hard work.
In 2009, after years of toiling with wineries as transitional suppliers, we were approached by a large client with high-profile brands. They asked if we could create 11 profiles that had sold far beyond what their original sources could supply. ATC approached this challenge by locating vineyards in the same AVAs and then creating highly regimented cropping, harvesting, winemaking and blending regimens. We created the many elements required to produce the profiles. When completed, our client had sufficient stock of the 11 wines to fill shelves across the country. That effort was so successful that ATC established a vines-to-wines program with the winery; signing a contract that continues today.
ATC now offers this service of creating specific wines, no matter the situation, for wineries, wine clubs, retailers, restaurants, hospitality companies and other organizations. Our scope has extended beyond Napa Valley to include all of California’s wine regions, allowing us to meet the most specific profiles that challenge our clients.
